Have you or someone you know been injured in a car accident? Many people don’t realise just how severe a car accident can be. A car crash may cause significant injury to your body, with or without symptoms. Pain after a car accident is a good indication that you suffered an injury
As a chiropractor, I know only too well the types of injury and trauma that occur as a result of car accidents. So, should you see a chiropractor after a car accident?
One of the most common types of injury from a car crash is whiplash.
Whiplash occurs when the head is suddenly moved/jarred forwards, backwards or to the side. Most people don’t realise that it takes 2-3 days for the symptoms of whiplash to occur.
This is because it takes time for inflammation from the tiny tears in injured ligaments and muscles to build up to a point where they cause discomfort.
Injury can occur to the spine, neck and muscles. Other types of injury can include:
A research paper published in ‘The Journal of The Canadian Chiropractic Association‘ cites that for those patients injured in a motor vehicle accident, the average number of chiropractic treatment sessions given was 14.
This number was higher for those patients who suffered low back and headache complaints as a result of the crash.
Also, the level of improvement for those patients who received chiropractic care earlier than those who did not, was higher.
If you are experiencing symptoms of pain after an accident, you may benefit from a checkup. The good news is that by providing treatment after an accident, your body may have a greater chance of recovering faster.
